Draupadi Murmu elected as the 15th President of India; First tribal woman & the youngest Prez to get the post

New Delhi. Registering a historic victory, Droupadi Murmu has been elected as the 15th President of India. Returning Officer of the Presidential Election and Rajya Sabha Secretary General P C Mody announced the election of Ms Murmu after completion of counting of the votes last evening.

He said, Ms Murmu accumulated 64 percent of the total votes in the elections and opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha got 36 percent off the votes. The Secretary-General said, of the four thousand seven hundred 54 valid electors, Ms Murmu got votes of two thousand 824 lawmakers including 540 MPs and the value of the vote is Six lakh 76 thousand 803. He said, Mr Sinha got the votes of One thousand eight hundred 77 lawmakers including 208 MPs and the value of the vote is three lakh 80 thousand 177.

Later, returning officer Mody went to Ms Murmu’s residence and handed over the certificate to her. Ms Murmu is the first tribal woman and the second woman to hold the position of President of India. Chief Justice of India, Justice N V Ramana will administer the oath of office to Ms Murmu on Monday at the Central Hall of Parliament.

Meanwhile, Yashwant Sinha, the opposition candidate in the presidential election, accepted his defeat and congratulated Murmu. She said every Indian hopes that as the 15th President, she will act as the “Guardian of the Constitution” without any fear or favour.

PM greets Murmu for win

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Murmu on her victory in the presidential election and said that India has created history by electing a leader born in a tribal community from a remote part of eastern India as the President. Union minister Rajnath Singh congratulated Murmu on her “impressive” victory in the presidential election and said her victory was a sign of the strength of Indian democracy.

President Kovind congratulates Murmu

President Ram Nath Kovind congratulated Draupadi Murmu on being elected the next President of the country. Kovind tweeted, “Heartfelt congratulations and best wishes on the election of Mrs. Draupadi Murmu as the 15th President of India.” President Kovind completed his five-year term on Sunday.

Sinha greets Murmu for victory

Opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha on Thursday congratulated National Democratic Alliance candidate Draupadi Murmu on her victory in the presidential election. She said every Indian hopes that as the 15th President, she will act as the “Guardian of the Constitution” without any fear or favour.
