Raipur. The Legislative Party of Chhattisgarh’s main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has elected MLA Narayan Chandel from Janjgir-Champa assembly constituency as its new leader. The party gave this information on Wednesday. The BJP said that Chandel will replace Dharamlal Kaushik. Along with this, BJP being the largest party in the opposition, its leader Chandel will also be the Leader of Opposition in the assembly.
BJP leaders said that a meeting of the BJP Legislature Party was held at the party’s headquarters ‘Kushabhou Thackeray Complex’ later this afternoon, in which the new leader was elected. After the defeat of the BJP in the 2018 assembly elections in the state, the party had then chosen backward class leader and former assembly speaker Dharamlal Kaushik as the leader from among its 15 MLAs. He was elected the fifth leader of the state and the second leader of the BJP.
In the state, speculations were being made about the appointment of a new Leader of Opposition in the state after the appointment of Arun Sao, MP from Bilaspur Lok Sabha constituency as the new BJP state president. The new Leader of Opposition Chandel was born on 19 April 1965 in Naila place of Janjgir-Champa district. Chandel is considered a prominent leader of the backward classes in the state. Chandel was elected to the undivided Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly for the first time in the year 1998. After this, he was elected to the Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly in the year 2008 and 2018.

Narayan Chandel has also been the Deputy Speaker of the Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly and has held various positions in the party. After being elected the new leader of the BJP Legislature Party, Chandel said during a conversation with the reporters, “The legislature party has unanimously elected me as the Leader of the Opposition. I will discharge my responsibility by taking everyone along.” He said that Bhupesh Baghel’s government in the state is a government of lies. The people of the state will overthrow this government.
